Wanna hear a fun story about this color?
Back in the day we did all the coating for Cobalt Kinetics. Not a couple here and there—about ten guns a day, every day, with a near-zero defect rate. We literally had staff whose full-time job was coating their rifles.
During that time we developed two custom colors for them: Cobalt Green and Cobalt Slate Blue. Getting those colors dialed in was not easy. It took a lot of testing, tweaking, and wasted material before we finally nailed the exact look they wanted.
Then one day—after months and months of running this program successfully—we got a call from our contact over there asking if we could send a couple of small sample bottles of the colors so they could do some “touch-ups” after assembly.
That sounded reasonable enough. We wanted to keep the relationship solid, so we promptly boxed up two bottles and sent them over.
I’m not even sure they ever opened them.
Those bottles went straight to Cerakote so they could try to reverse-engineer the colors.
While that was happening, something else started to change…
The guns stopped showing up.
When I called to ask what was going on, we were told they were going through some “tooling changes” and that production would be ramping back up soon. Weeks turned into months while we kept staff on payroll waiting for the work to return.
The guns never came.
Eventually—after my bank account had taken a pretty serious beating—I heard from someone on the inside that they had moved the entire coating operation in-house… they just didn’t have the cojones to tell us.
Now look—moving things in-house isn’t the issue. It’s their company. They’re absolutely entitled to run it however they want.
But the way they handled it was… let’s just call it pretty damn shady.
Because if they had shown even a little bit of class, we would have happily worked out a licensing deal for the color formulas. Instead they spent about $15,000 PER COLOR having Cerakote try to replicate something we had already perfected.
And the best part?
Ours still look way better.
So when you order Cobalt Green or Cobalt Slate Blue from Tactical Penguin, you’re not getting the knockoff version.
You’re getting the original recipe.
The one we created.
The one they tried to copy.
And the only one that still looks the way it’s supposed to.
Lucky you.
